Happy birthday, Uncle Jim!
I have two weeks of vacation at the end of February and my Uncle Jim is coming to travel with me. Two years ago at the end of my study abroad program in Spain we went to London, Budapest, Vienna, Prague, and Berlin and had a lot of fun, so I'm looking forward to this trip.
We're meeting in Milan, Italy, where I'll arrive obscenely early on an overnight train from Paris. The only other certain plan we have right now is a visit to Krakow, Poland, where Uncle Jim will leave to fly home.
In between the two, my rough idea is to visit two out of three of these cities: Venice, Italy; Ljubljana, Slovenia; and Zagreb, Croatia. After that, we'll take a train north to Bratislava before winding up in Krakow. I have had no luck in finding any trains to Bratislava from any of those three previously named cities, so there will probably be an intermediate stop in there.
Then after Uncle Jim leaves, I have four or five days before I have to be back in Montlucon. I have no ideas yet what I'll do with that time, and my only stipulation is that I finish my trip in a city that has cheap flights back to Paris or some other French city. Any suggestions?

Not sure where all you've been or about the flight situation from these cities, because I've always preferred train travel, but here are some of my faves:
Luxembourg City
Brussels
Pretty much anything in Holland
Dublin
Or in France, where you can just hop a train back to Paris:
Lyon (my absolute favorite city in the world)
Tours and the Loire country
Bretagne and Normandy
Just some suggestions. :-)

Thanks for the suggestions, Kristin. I'll definitely have to check those out. I think there may actually be flights from Krakow to Brussels, so that could work out nicely...
We have to catch up soon!!! :)

Much better than Brussels is Brugge, it's very closed to Brussels by train, no more than half an hour or something. I think Brussels is more impersonal, only the Maneken Pis and no much more, but Brugge has "charme" (french word). It's my opinion. Good trainings.

Hmm. I have four days or so, so I could fly to Brussels, trip over to Brugge before taking the train via Paris back to Montlucon...

I'd have to disagree... Bruges is nice, but there's not much to it, it's just charming and pretty and that's about it. It's worth checking out, but don't eliminate Brussels. Brussels takes a bit more work to really see and understand, but it's worth it. You have to put some effort into visiting Brussels, because it doesn't put itself out there for tourists the way Bruges does, but once you really spend some time there, it's well worth it. Don't do it if you're only going to spend a day, but it's full of some great contradictions and history.
